AI Water Damage Repair

Restore water damaged photos with AI in 30 seconds.

Water is the worst thing that can happen to a photo collection. A single basement flood, hurricane, burst pipe, or roof leak can damage an entire lifetime of family photos. Brown stains, mold spots, stuck-together prints, and warped surfaces. AI separates the water damage from the real image and removes it.

Can water damaged photos be saved?

Usually yes, and more often than people expect. The key is understanding what water actually does to a photo. Brown stains are mineral deposits sitting on top of the image. Tide marks are where the waterline dried. These are surface contamination. The image underneath is usually intact. The AI can see through the stain pattern and extract the clean image. The exceptions are: photos that were submerged for weeks where the emulsion dissolved completely, and photos where mold has eaten deep into the image layer. For recent water damage (hours to days), the salvage rate is high. Even for old damage from floods years ago, the dried stains can usually be removed digitally.

  • Most brown water stains are surface deposits, not image destruction
  • AI separates the stain pattern from the photo underneath
  • Recent damage (hours-days): high salvage rate if handled correctly
  • Old dried damage (years ago): AI removes old stains just as effectively
  • Only total emulsion loss or deep mold is unrecoverable

What to expect

Types of water damage and what AI can fix

Brown stains come from minerals in the water that settle on the surface as it dries. Tide marks are the visible ring where the waterline was. Both are surface contamination. The image underneath is usually intact, and the AI lifts these off cleanly.

Mold appears as fuzzy green, black, or white spots that eat into the emulsion if left untreated. Color bleeding happens when wet prints touch each other and the dyes transfer. Warping occurs when the paper base absorbs water unevenly.

The AI handles all of these. For stains and mold, it separates the damage pattern from the real image. For color bleeding, it reconstructs the original colors. For warping, the flat scan eliminates the distortion. Most water-damaged photos recover better than expected.

How it works

3 simple steps.

First 48 Hours

Your photos are still wet. Here is what to do right now.

Do not throw wet photos away. You have about 48 hours before mold starts. Pick up by edges only, lay face-up on paper towels, no heat. Once dry, scan and upload for AI restoration.

  • Handle wet photos by edges only, emulsion is soft
  • Air-dry face-up on paper towels, never stack
  • No heat: hair dryers permanently warp the emulsion
  • Mold starts within 48 hours on damp prints

Types of Water Damage

Brown stains, mold, stuck photos, color bleeding.

Brown stains, tide marks, mold spots, color bleeding, warping. The AI separates each damage pattern from the image underneath and removes it. The photo is usually intact under the stains.

  • Brown stains and tide marks: mineral deposits the AI lifts off
  • Mold spots: AI removes visible growth from the scan
  • Color bleeding from stuck photos: original colors reconstructed

In-depth guide

Water damage recovery timeline: what to do and when

First hour: retrieve the photos from the water. Handle by edges only. Do not stack, do not rub, do not wipe, do not shake off water. Lay each print face-up on a clean paper towel on a flat surface. Open windows for air circulation. If it is a large collection (a whole box or album), prioritize: pull out wedding photos, grandparent portraits, baby photos, and one-of-a-kind prints first.

Hours 1-6: if any photos are stuck together, do not wait for them to dry stuck. Submerge stuck pairs in clean distilled water now while the emulsion is still flexible. They separate more easily while wet than once they dry bonded together. Gently float them in a clean tray of distilled water and wait for them to separate on their own.

Hours 6-48: change the paper towels under drying prints every 4-6 hours as they absorb moisture. Monitor for mold. In humid conditions, mold can appear as early as 24 hours. If you see fuzzy spots forming, the print needs to be scanned immediately, even if it is not fully dry. A slightly damp scan is better than letting mold eat the emulsion.

Day 2-7: most prints should be dry by now. Flatten any curled photos overnight between heavy books. Scan each print at 600 DPI in full color mode (even B&W photos, because the color data in the stain helps the AI separate stain from image). Upload to restorephotosapp.com and select "Repair" mode.

For insurance documentation: photograph every damaged photo before and after restoration. Many homeowner insurance policies cover photo restoration costs as part of flood or water damage claims. Keep your receipts. FEMA disaster assistance may also cover photo preservation in declared disaster areas.

After digital restoration, store the files in two separate locations (cloud + local drive). If the photos are also faded from age, run restorephotosapp.com/fix-faded-photos as a second step after water damage repair. The digital restoration is the permanent version now.

Expert tips

Tips for water damaged photo recovery

1

Never use heat to dry wet photos

Hair dryers, space heaters, and direct sunlight permanently warp the print base and can crack or bubble the emulsion. Air-dry in a cool room for 24 to 48 hours.

2

Handle wet prints by the edges only

The emulsion is soft when wet. Touching the front surface with fingers will leave permanent marks or peel off the image layer entirely. Handle by the edges or the back only.

3

Do not peel apart stuck photos

Wet photos often stick to each other, to glass, or to album pages. Forcing them apart rips the emulsion. Soak in clean distilled water for 15 to 30 minutes and they will usually separate on their own.

4

Scan in color even for B&W photos

Water stains leave color information (brown, yellow, green from mold) that helps the AI distinguish the stain from the image. Scanning in grayscale loses this information.

5

Prioritize the irreplaceable photos

If you have a flood-damaged box, restore the one-of-a-kind photos first: grandparent portraits (restorephotosapp.com/restore-family-photos), wedding photos (restorephotosapp.com/restore-wedding-photos), baby photos (restorephotosapp.com/restore-baby-photos). Come back for duplicates later.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can AI fix photos damaged by a basement flood?

Yes. Basement flood damage is one of the most common cases we handle. The AI removes the brown water stains and mineral deposits that settle on the print surface during drying. Faces and details hidden under the stains usually come back clean.

My photos have mold spots. Can AI remove them?

Yes. Mold spots on photo surfaces are treated the same as other surface damage. The AI recognizes the organic growth pattern as separate from the image and removes it. For photos with active mold, dry them and scan them before the mold eats deeper into the emulsion.

Can AI fix photos that were stuck together?

If you can separate them (soak in distilled water for 15-30 minutes), the AI can repair the surface damage from the adhesion. If the emulsion transferred from one photo to the other during separation, those transferred areas are gone from the original but the AI can reconstruct a plausible fill.

My photos got wet in a hurricane. Where do I start?

First, air-dry them (no heat). Then scan and restore the most irreplaceable photos first: wedding portraits, grandparent photos, baby pictures. If the dried photos are also scratched or creased from the event, see restorephotosapp.com/remove-scratches-from-photos or restorephotosapp.com/fix-creased-photos after water damage repair.

How should I dry wet photos?

Face-up on clean paper towels in a cool, well-ventilated room. No hair dryers, no sun, no ovens. Change the paper towels every few hours. Full drying takes 24 to 48 hours. Do not stack photos while drying.

Is water damage restoration free to try?

Yes. Every account gets 2 free restorations. Try it on your worst water-damaged photo first.

Can AI fix a photo with a large brown water stain across a face?

Usually yes. Brown water stains are mineral deposits sitting on top of the image. The AI separates the stain pattern from the face underneath. Even heavy stains covering most of a face often clean up well because the image data is still there beneath the deposits.

Should I try to clean the physical photo before scanning?

Do not use water, chemicals, or cleaners on water-damaged prints. The emulsion is already compromised and any liquid or rubbing may remove the image entirely. Just dry the photo, scan it as-is, and let the AI handle the cleanup digitally.

Can I fix photos from a flood that happened years ago?

Yes. Old water damage (dried stains, mold spots from past events) is actually easier to scan than fresh wet prints because the photos are dry and stable. The AI removes old water stains just as effectively as fresh ones.

How many water damaged photos can I restore?

As many as you need. The Family plan covers 150 photos for $19.99 ($0.13 each) and the Studio plan covers 450 for $49.99 ($0.11 each). For a flood-damaged box of 50 to 200 photos, one of these plans covers everything.
